April 1990 Planning started to establish a center to serve families and children in the 8 Lower and Outer Cape towns of Brewster, Chatham, Eastham, Harwich, Orleans, Provincetown, Truro and Wellfleet. November 1992 A state grant for $396,050 was awarded, to be managed through the Town of Eastham, for construction of the Children's Place. December 1993 Another grant was awarded, $359,544 for a two-year period, to cover the initial operating costs of the Children's Place. Nov. 1993-May 1994 Parents and interested members of the community met regularly to identify issues and concerns to be addressed by the Children's Place. They also gave input in the design of the building. August 1994 The first Children's Place staff were hired. A community outreach team worked for the next 12 months to involve parents, schools, agencies and individuals in identifying families' needs. Support groups and programs were also initiated. Oct. 1994-June 1995 The Children's Place was built and formally incorporated as a non-profit agency under the name Cape Cod Children's Place. The first Board of Directors was selected. CCCP became administrator for a grant from the Dept. of Education supporting both Eastham and Wellfleet Preschool programs. September 1995 The preschool program at Cape Cod Children's Place officially opened, replacing - and expanding - the Eastham Preschool which formerly operated at Eastham Elementary School. The toddler program opened within two months. November 1995 CCCP received grant funds from the Dept. of Education to support preschool and afterschool programs on the Lower and Outer Cape. November 1996 Additional funds for preschool-age services - primarily for childcare subsidies to working parents - were awarded to CCCP through a Community Partnerships for Children (CPC) grant from the MA Dept. of Education. The Lower Cape Community Council started meeting, to oversee and implement the CPC grant funds. Now named the Lower Cape Early Childhood Council, this group continues to meet monthly. November 1997 A Mass. Family Network (MFN) grant was awarded to CCCP to create programs and services for children aged birth-3 years in the 8 towns listed above. A Family Support Program was initiated with funds from this grant. Additional CPC grant funds were also awarded to provide more childcare subsidies and other programs. 1999 and 2000 Additional CPC grant funds created the Early Childhood Teacher Resource Center, housed at CCCP. These funds also bought the van, and continued to expand the childcare subsidies (CPC vouchers). The Lower Cape Emergency Childcare Fund was created to help families pay for childcare. 2002 and 2003 A state budget crisis resulted in a reduction of grant funds. Planning was initiated to secure the longterm future of CCCP, through marketing and and development initiatives. 2004 Funds awarded by Cape & Islands United Way enabled us to create pilot program: the Family Road Shows, bringing parent education to all our 8 towns. A new grant from Children's Trust Fund enabled us to contiue and expand this program and enhance our Family Support services. A grant from Barnstable Economic Development Council funded planning for satellite childcare site. State funds enabled the Early Childhood Resouce Center to expand its services to the entire Cape & Islands. 2005 A United Way grant funded the first year of our CAPE Kids summer satellite program for children in grades K-5, based at Wellfleet Elementary School. 2006 We opened our Sea-Babies satellite infant-toddler childcare program at the Wellfleet Council on Aging. |
